The fire began around 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24 in Dutchess County at 10 Market St., in Wappingers Falls, officials said.

The building includes 10 apartments and at least three businesses, including Mario's Sandwich Company and TJ's Barbershop, among others.

Some 12 to 14 fire departments have responded to the area and flames and smoke can be seen coming from the top and back of the building.

Wappingers Police said East Main Street through the business district is closed. Traffic is being detoured at Highway 9.

All are asked to avoid the area of Mill Street, Market Street, and West Main Street.

Village officials said that all residents affected by the fire on Market Street are encouraged to go to the American Red Cross temporary headquarters at the Knights of Columbus on East Main Street.

"Our hearts go out to our businesses and residents who are affected by this," Village officials said. "We are wishing for the safety of our first responders as well."
